Affiliate programs in Sweden

Worldwide, there's a high number of affiliate programs - administrated and owned by affiliate networks. These networks handle affiliate business between advertiser and webmasters, paying for clicks and leads or commission on sales. The affiliate program business model i simple, they work as the middle man, erasing the doubt of one part cheating the other of money.

Affiliate programs and their shape is decided purely by the advertiser, but some obvious limitations are set by the affiliate network technology. Regular settings for the affiliate programs are:

  • PPI, Payment per impressions (Refered by the webmaster as EPI, Earnings per impression)
  • PPC, Payment per click (EPC, Earnings per click)
  • PPL, Payment per lead (EPI, Earnings per lead)
  • PPS, Pay per sale - commission or a static payment
A common denominator for all affiliate programs is that they feed on the small sites, their business idea is to create networks of hundreds of thousands small sites, that are too small to offer anything valuable to an advertiser own their own.
As an example, TeliaSonera with net sales at over $11 billion would never bother to create partnership with a site with 100 visitors a day. However, by creating an affiliate program, TeliaSonera can bundle a hundred thousand small sites, and show their ads to 100,000 * 100 = 10,000,000 unique visitors a day - which is quite a lot. This is the power of affiliate programs.

Swedish affiliate programs

A few of the largest companies that do marketing through affiliate programs in Sweden are: The vast majority of these pay a static sum of money or commission to their affiliate, each time a visitor uses the affiliate links and then buys a product or service at their site. The reason for PPS in comparison to PPC is the decreased risk of affiliates trying to cheat the system by pretending to be visitors, using their own links.
Larger web sites in affiliate programs are often payed per click or impression, since these aren't as likely to bother trying to cheat.

Choosing affiliate network

There are a number of large networks moving into the Swedish market - Commission Junction being one of them, sadly however, right now there are only two alternatives.
  • Tradedoubler

This network is by far the largest in terms of affiliates and advertisers, and their suport outranks the competition. Advertising in affiliate programs under TradeDoubler does however, often mean high monthly fees - which party decreases their objectiveness, since they make money even if the advertisers cheat their affiliates. Some of the TradeDoubler affiliate programs are completely useless, offering 3-5% commission on products that are very hard to promote, and where users often search online and buy offline. But others can be real goldmines, providing 15-20% sale rates and 10-15% commissions. This network features ad pools which makes handling the advertisers extremly easy and efficient.

  • Double

This is a far smaller network than TradeDoubler, with everything that comes to beeing an underdog. The support is not anything to brag about, and the amount of affiliates is far lower. The advantage with the Double affiliate programs for the advertiser is that no monthly fees are applied, and there isn't as high risk of being considered unimportant for the network.
For there web site owner there are also advantages, a few of them are that many affiliate programs have better terms, pay higher commisions and have higher payments for clicks. You also don't have to be as large as in TD, to be considered important.

Affiliate programs compared to Google Adsense

Now, comparing the above networks with a fenomena known to most webmasters, Adsense. Not totally unexpected, the answer depends on the web site topic and surfers, some adsense ads pay $5-$10 per click, while most pay as low as $0.05-$0.10.
Same thing goes for affiliate programs, some can give you a conversion rate on 10% with $50 commission ($5 per impression) - others can be displayed a hundred thousand times without generating even a cents revenue.
To make sure not to lose huge amounts of potential earnings, affiliates should evaluate each network and adsense atleast for a month, trying out as many different adsense ads and placements and also different affiliate programs.
One method for easily comparing a high amount of affiliate ads is to create TradeDoubler ad pools and insert hundreds of different advertisements. After having them online for a couple of weeks one can generate TD reports, displaying the efficiency of each ad.
